Tippi Benjamine Okanti Degré, daughter of French wildlife photographers Alain Degré and Sylvie Robert, was born in Namibia. During her childhood she befriended many wild animals, including a 28-year old elephant called Abu and a leopard nicknamed J&B. She was embraced by the Bushmen and the Himba tribespeople of the Kalahari, who taught her how to survive on roots and berries, as well as how to speak their language.

In 2012, extreme weather clean-up cost U.S. taxpayers nearly $100 billion — or $1,100 per taxpayer.
via Report: In 2012 Feds Spent More on Extreme Weather Cleanup Than on Schools, Roads - WNYC

Nope. The recommendations contained in the report are baseless. There is not a single reputable model that shows cutting U.S. emissions by 25-36% will “save lives” as this report claims.
None. Zero.
The premise may be true - that US taxpayers are 1) paying via taxes for disasters at unprecedented rates and 2) insurance companies are increasingly pulling out of vulnerable coastal and agricultural areas. These are wicked problems. They need to be addressed. But the solution proffered is utterly false.
To make the leap that both of these complex problems will stop - that lives will be saved if only Obama cuts emissions by x amount - is scientifically inaccurate (even manipulative).
Shame on the NRDC.

This week GAB are looking at the benefits of gaming. We’ve almost drowned ourselves in discussing race and geek girls - and it’s high time we had a nice break to feel warm and fuzzy.

Lets remind ourselves of not only why we love gaming, but why it can be good for us.

We’ll be posting and linking things like the one above (source: http://visual.ly/gaming-good-you) here, and on our Twitter, Facebook & Website.
And you can share your questions and stories with us by dropping us an Ask.

Merry Gaming :)

Actually, this explains a lot, particularly the bit about how some games can help fix lazy eye. I’ve been wearing at least reading glasses since I was twelve because of a ‘focus disorder’, which is basically both eyes being lazy. The exercises that they might have prescribed to help correct the problems gave me headaches, so I stuck with glasses, switching to bifocals and then varifocals as my distance vision deteriorated.

I started playing video games to any great degree relatively recently, and in my last couple of eye exams, I’ve been told that my close vision has actually improved. I’ll still probably always need the varifocals, but given that the improvement in my vision came pretty close on the heels of my starting to play video games in any meaningful amount… Well. *g*

I’m missing some nuances here and there and the term ‘educational games’ is not always used correctly, but the idea is sound and true: gaming can be utilized for our physical and mental well being and for the good of our society.

DIY bionics - making kids smile again.
See the joy in Liam’s eyes as he is grasping a ball with his right hand for the first time. By the time this cute fellow grows up, he will have a bionic hand that will be connected to his neural-system and be indistinguishable from his biological body; but for now all Liam cares about is being able to play ball.
